Eucalyptus leaf
A eucalyptus leaf is a type of veggy comestible that appears in NetHack.

Generation
Tourists may start with eucalyptus leaves among their random food items.[1] Orcish heroes that are not Wizards may start with eucalyptus leaves among their extra food.[2][3]
Eucalyptus leaves are very rare and make up 3⁄1000 (0.3%) of all randomly-generated comestibles. General stores, delicatessens and health food stores can sell eucalyptus leaves.
Tree 'fruits' have a 1⁄5 chance of being eucalyptus leaves, and generate in the following circumstances:[4][5]
- Kicking a tree has a one-time 14⁄15 chance of dropping (8−rnl(7)) eucalyptus leaves.[6]
- Cutting down a tree has a 1⁄5 chance of producing a eucalyptus leaf.[7]
- A tree that is tunneled through has a 1⁄3 chance of leaving behind eucalyptus leaves.[8]
Applying a charged horn of plenty has a 0.3% chance of generating a eucalyptus leaf or two.[9]
Description
Eating a eucalyptus leaf takes 1 actions and grants 30 nutrition, and eating a non-cursed one also cures sickness and nausea.[10]
Applying a eucalyptus leaf treats it as a whistle: it acts as a magic whistle if blessed and a tin whistle otherwise, and there is a 1⁄50 chance of a blessed eucalyptus leaf becoming uncursed after applying it.[11]
The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that the information below is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate it.
The eucalyptus leaf now provides only 1 nutrition.Strategy
If you have a stack of eucalyptus but have not yet discovered a magic whistle, the eucalyptus can be a useful substitute if dipped into holy water. Eucalyptus leaves can also act as a reliable sickness cure for later stages of the game, though there is a small chance of the leaf being rotten and causing you to pass out.
There is a 19.4% chance of getting eucalyptus leaves from any given tree by kicking it until it produces food, then cutting it down - the odds of finding any are much better if you encounter a Big Room map, Medusa's Island map, or themed rooms containing lots of trees. Specific role Quests are also heavily populated by trees.
History
The eucalyptus leaf first appears in NetHack 3.3.0.
Origin
Eucalyptus is a genus of more than 700 species of flowering plants in the family Myrtaceae, with most species being trees (often mallees) and a few of them being shrubs. They are commonly known as eucalypts or "gum trees", and have bark that is either smooth, fibrous, hard or stringy; the leaves have glands that produce oil, and the fruit is a woody capsule commonly referred to as a "gumnut". Most species of Eucalyptus are native to Australia, and every state and territory has representative species - about three-quarters of Australian forests are eucalypt forests, and many eucalypt species have adapted to wildfires. A few species are native to islands north of Australia and a smaller number are only found outside the continent.
The use of a eucalyptus leaf as a magic whistle is based on the Australian 1960s TV show Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, which has a recognizable theme call played on a eucalyptus leaf that causes Skippy to come bounding through the bush to whoever played it.

UnNetHack also incorporates Dungeon Growths, which behaves as in SLASH'EM.
dNetHack
In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, Healers start the game with 5-10 blessed eucalyptus leaves.
